O DIA 3 DO CONGRESSO

The I ABCRC Congress - Part 4
DAY 3 OF THE CONGRESS
On June 18, 2004, the Day 3 of the congress was marked by themes that were relevant to the time and that remain important to this day.
The approach to the donor area, size of the ellipse, mega and giga sessions, design of the anterior line, surgical treatment of the crown, reconstructive surgeries, post-operative care, legal issues and conferences by Dr. William Rassman (USA) on "Follicular Units and Follicular Families x micrograft and minigraft”, and Dr. Russell Knudsen (AU) about “Baldness surgery in the XXI century” were discussed.
At that time, FUT was the main technique used for hair restoration, fully mastered by Brazilian specialists. The trichophytic suture was the highlight of the FUT technique. Also highlighted was the beveled incision of the donor strip, respecting the distribution and angulations of the follicular units, just like an "incisional slivering" for removing the strip. The tactic was presented in detail in theoretical classes and in one of the surgeries at the II ABCRC workshop, at Hospital Memorial São José.
The use of microscopy in surgery was widely discussed at the meeting and unanimously among the pairs, if the images would be clearly enlarged for the good practice of slivering in the FUT technique.
The FOX technique, then FUE, had been presented two years earlier by Dr. Rassman (author of the technique) at the ISHRS congress in Chicago. At the I Congress of ABCRC, this technique was shown in detail at a conference given by Professor Rassman. The FUE was at initial stages, however, it was not yet fully recommended by most of the experienced specialists at the time.
The grafting of the UFs was carried out using the Stick and Place techniques (incision and immediate placement of the UFs) and/or by previous incisions, as it is still done today. The incisions were made with beaver, ophthalmic, SP blades, needles of different gauges and, occasionally, with size 11 or customized blades. Implanters already existed, but in Brazil few specialists used them.
The coronal and sagittal incisions were widely discussed and the angulations in certain regions achieved greater volume due to the visual effect on baldness, arousing greater interest and understanding in relation to real density versus cosmetic density.
The anterior line was also widely discussed at the congress, as at all hair restoration events. The anterior zones stood out as noble areas, and the main differences of the anterior line of people were explained. It was also discussed the importance of creating an irregular layout to maintain the naturalness of the graft, and that it should be in gradient.
These were some of the relevant topics on the 3rd day of the ABCRC Congress.
