(Figs 1a, 1b, 1c e 1d)

Convite dos Diretores:
Dr. Marcelo Gandelman
A medicina é fundamentalmente estudar e adquirir conhecimentos.

(Fig. 2a, 2b e 2c)

The I ABCRC Congress - Part 1
Dr. Fernando Basto
*The images from the I Brazilian Congress of HAIR RESTORATION SURGERY were retrieved in a photographic laboratory. Many of these images were practically destroyed by time, and others could not be used due to the wear and tear of the paper.
Please understand us and enjoy this reading.
For those who participated in the congress, it is worth remembering the decisive meeting for the development of ABCRC.
SUMMARY
The author of this article describes in detail what the I BRAZILIAN CONGRESS OF HAIR RESTORATION SURGERY of the ABCRC was the informal meeting of colleagues at the FERNANDO BASTO clinic on day 1 of the event, 06/16/2004, for social interaction among peers and the pre-operative examination of patients who underwent hair transplant on Saturday, June 19; After the meeting at the clinic, the guests were taken to the INSTITUTO RICARDO BRENNAND (IRB) where they could learn about the world's largest collection of Dutch painter Frans Post, first landscaper in the Americas and first painter of the Brazilian landscape.
The IRB has one of the largest collections of bladed weapons in the world, with more than three thousand pieces, including 27 complete medieval suits of armor.
It was a busy and interesting afternoon from a scientific and cultural point of view.
On June 17, 2004, the second day of the congress was full of scientific news, with a packed and participatory auditorium, with numerous classes and conferences by Dr. Marcelo Gandelman (SP) and late Dr. Arturo Sandoval (MX).
On the evening, guests were taken to the Government Palace and had a welcome cocktail, attended by a considerable number of guests; in addition to countless tributes paid to renowned colleagues present, guests watched a performance by Italian tenors and a popular ballet performance with a simple demonstration of the Pernambuco frevo.
On June 18th, the third day of the congress was intense with many classes and conferences. On that day, we had the honor of lectures by professors William Rassman, who presented the "FOX" technique for the first time in Brazil and Russell Knudsen who spoke about "Baldness surgery in the 21st century".
Dr. Rassman's conference had great meaning for all participants because the FOX technique had been presented in Chicago (USA) two years before the Brazilian congress, in 2002. At that time, FOX, (which came to be called FUE - follicular unit excision), still did not enchant specialists, and FUT continued to reign in the world of hair restoration, when the first manual micromotors, sharp punches and more appeared. delicate issues, arousing the interest of specialists in FUE in 2008.
On the evening of that third day, we had a Gala dinner served at the French restaurant Chez Georges in the hotel, and many other tributes were paid.
On day 4 of the congress, we had a workshop with live surgeries broadcast from the Hospital
Memorial São José for the hotel auditorium, with the participation of surgeons Rassman (USA), Knudsen (AU), late Sandoval (MX), Leão (MG), A. Muricy (PR), Basto (PE), Speranzini ( SP), and supporting surgeons who participated informally, but highly contributed to further enrich the Workshop*.
*The live transmission of the surgeries during the workshop to the auditorium presented some technical problems, and so that there was no harm to the participants, it was decided to record all the surgeries on CDs and send them to all those registered.

THE BRAZILIAN ASSOCIATION OF HAIR RESTORATION SURGERY, ABCRC, was founded in 2003 by plastic surgeons José C. Muricy, Carlos E. Leão, Marcelo Gandelman and Fernando Basto. That same year, at an extraordinary board meeting, the founding partners decided that the association's first congress would be in 2004 in the city of Recife under the coordination of founding partner Fernando Basto.
Hosting the 1st congress in Recife, my hometown, was a source of great honor and great responsibility for me.
The 1st BRAZILIAN CONGRESS represented at that time the first major challenge for the newly created ABCRC, and the date chosen for the event was June 16th to 19th, 2004.
Due to the importance of the scientific meeting and my experience in holding other plastic surgery events in Recife, such as the first hair restoration surgery course in 1993, a both theoretical and practical course, with the participation of two great masters of Brazilian plastic surgery, the late professors Munir Curi (SP) and Perseu Lemos (PE); filling and Botox course, in 1998, with the special presence of Dr. Paulo Matsudo; rhinoplasty workshop in 1999 with the participation of two renowned surgeons: the Brazilian, Dr. Volney Pitombo (BA) and the Argentine, late Dr. José Juri (AR), with theoretical classes and six surgeries broadcast live to the auditorium, with great influence on the training of plastic surgeons in Pernambuco due to the different approaches of the invited surgeons; In the early 2000s, CLINICA FERNANDO BASTO coordinated gluteoplasty courses with Dr. George Otero (MX) and Rhytidoplasty with Dr. Ronaldo Pontes (RJ), two great icons of Brazilian plastic surgery. Additionally, other events were held under my responsibility, and therefore I had some experience in organizing events of that kind.
Thus, the FERNANDO BASTO clinic took on the organization of the I BRAZILIAN ABCRC CONGRESS with great optimism and determination. (Figs 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d)

Invitation from Directors:
Dr. Marcelo Gandelman
Medicine is fundamentally about studying and acquiring knowledge. Medical Art is constantly reformulating. Everything we believe to be definitive and modern is debatable and hides mistakes that time will reveal. We were blessed to witness the passing of the millennium and enjoy the wonders of today.
Do you remember how difficult it was to learn surgery? By the time the information reached magazines and books, it was already obsolete. Today, on the contrary, we can send an email about a difficult case to our colleagues and that is it! Hours later, several solutions and approaches are on our table.
For example, hair transplants were performed secretly in private clinics, and we learned this having our chins resting on our colleagues' shoulders. Today, live surgery workshops even allow us to participate in the surgical procedure or comment on it from the comfort of a room with a big screen and air conditioning. Many techniques are learned in the halls of conferences, where the papers presented are judged, the scientific organizer is evaluated, and doubts are clarified. Chatting in the corridors promotes new knowledge, friendships are started, and alliances are made. That is what happened in Curitiba at the society's founding workshop.
This excellence will be expanded in Recife, at our Brazilian Congress on Hair Restoration Surgery and II Workshop.
Come, meet me in the halls and tell me I am right.
Dr. Carlos E. Leão
My friends,
It is a pleasure to know that we will meet in Recife, next June. We will certainly be part of the history of ABCRC when we witness its birth in style, as required by the protocol of seriousness, commitment to science, institutional strengthening, healthy unity, and the ethics that build so much .
Together with Marcelo, Fernando and Muricy, we will be with open arms, hearts, and minds, waiting for you, so that, together, we can make the first page of a society that is born with prodromes of strength and efficiency. With a hug and esteem.
Dr. Fernando Basto
Welcome to Recife!
Come and participate in the 1st Brazilian Congress of Hair Restoration Surgery, which will undoubtedly be a great challenge for the newly created Society.
Today Recife represents the second medical hub in Brazil, with international standard private hospitals and an efficient public hospital network. It has an incomparable architecture, with beautiful beaches and several historical monuments spread throughout the city, as well as a high-level hotel structure and an undeniable gastronomic hub.
The social program is being lovingly prepared for you and your companions.
We are working hard to make this congress an unmissable scientific meeting. We will spare no effort! We count on everyone's suggestions.
Anyone interested in presenting some work, send us a summary.
Join us in this I Congress of the Brazilian Society of Hair Restoration, which will certainly be unforgettable.
Welcome!
Dr. José C. Muricy
We were finally able to make another dream come true, the creation of our Hair Surgery Restoration Society.
This society will contribute to the advancement and improvement of Baldness Surgery techniques. This will be the first official event of our Society; we hope to receive as many participants as possible.
We will meet in June in Recife.
See you there!
The I CONGRESS needed to be remarkable, and that's why collaborators and contractors spared no effort to offer the best they had to participants. Everyone formed a dedicated team to achieve excellence at the time. It was not easy.
The joint effort and unrestricted support of the entire ABCRC board helped a lot in holding the event.
The newly opened Beach Class Suítes Hotel on Avenida Boa Viagem hosted the congress. (Fig. 2a, 2b and 2c)

(fig 2a) Front view of the hotel. (fig 2b) Helical-shaped hotel lobby

(fig. 2c) Auditorium space
The GLOBAL agency was hired to be responsible for the event's media and technical support for classes in the auditorium.
An agreement was signed with the company LUCK VIAGENS to be the official travel agency for the congress.
For the culture activities, the Ricardo Brennand Institute was reserved for visiting the castle of arms and an art exhibition, focusing on the works of Frans Post (Dutch artist, first landscape artist in the Americas and first painter of the Brazilian landscape) .
For the official welcome cocktail, the Pernambuco Government Palace, also known as Palácio do Campo das Princesas, was available. (Figs 3a and 3b)

(Fig 3a) Pernambuco State Government Palace - night view.
In 1859, the Government Palace underwent renovations to accommodate Emperor Pedro II, Empress Teresa Cristina de Bourbon-of the Two Sicilies and their daughters. The palace then received the name Campo das Princesas (Princesses’ Field) , initially given to the garden, later extended to the Palace (Fig. 3b).

The palace was designed in 1786 by governor José César Meneses, and engineer Morais Âncora built it, at the behest of Governor Francisco do Rego Barros.
The Gala dinner was held at the French restaurant and buffet Chez Georges (Fig 4) and the best marketing agency in the region was hired to create and print certificates, as well as the entire congress program.
